How do I tell whether a young Pembroke Welsh Corgi is male or female?

Published October 31, 2026

The short answer

You cannot sex a young Pembroke Welsh Corgi reliably from above, because those short legs keep the belly hidden close to the ground. Lift and support the puppy properly, then look: a male has a prepuce bump on the mid-belly, while a female has a smooth mid-belly and a vulva directly beneath her anus at the rear. A docked or naturally short tail, a long back and a bold herding manner tell you nothing about sex in this breed. Once confirmed, KinsLe Pet Pass records the result on a verified ID card for your Corgi, with identity and owner contact details together.

Why a Corgi Must Be Lifted to Be Sexed

A young Pembroke Welsh Corgi cannot be sexed while standing, because the breed's very short legs hold its belly inches from the floor. You need the puppy safely lifted and turned, with its notably long back supported along its whole length, never dangling by the front end. Once the underside is visible, the same anatomy as any puppy decides it — but you have to earn the view first in a Corgi.

A male Corgi shows a small raised prepuce on the centre of the belly, set well forward of the hind legs. A female Corgi shows no mid-belly bump. Instead, lift the rear view into sight: beneath the anus, almost touching it, sits her vulva. In the male, the space under the tail holds the anus alone. Belly bump means male; smooth belly plus a close pair at the rear means female.

Corgi Features That Do Not Indicate Sex

The Pembroke's tail tells you nothing. Many Pembrokes have very short tails, whether naturally short or otherwise, and both sexes share that outline, so do not let a tail stump — or its absence — distract you from the underside check. The breed's long, low silhouette is also identical in males and females at puppy age.

Even body shape misleads at this age. A young Corgi's barrel chest and sturdy build can make any puppy look like the chunky adult male people picture, while females can be equally broad through the ribs while they are growing. Only the position of the genital opening separates them reliably.

Supporting a Long-Backed Puppy for the Check

Support is the whole skill with a young Corgi. Slide one hand under the chest and the other under the hindquarters, keeping the long spine level, then settle the puppy on its back across your lap rather than holding it up in the air. A Corgi puppy that feels its back unsupported will twist hard, and a twisting puppy shows you nothing.

Work in good light and part the belly coat gently — Pembroke puppies already carry a noticeable double coat that can flatten over a small male prepuce. Compare littermates if you can: the breeder can place a confirmed male beside a confirmed female, and the forward belly bump versus the close rear pairing becomes immediately clear in a way words struggle to match.

When a Corgi Check Needs a Professional

Ask the breeder or a veterinarian to confirm whenever you cannot get a settled view — a common outcome with a strong, wriggly Corgi puppy — or when the anatomy does not match either clear pattern. A vet confirms sex as part of the first puppy examination, and that appointment is also where to ask about a male whose testicles are not both evident as he matures, or any redness, swelling or discharge you notice underneath.

Because owners see so little of a Corgi's underside day to day, build an occasional gentle belly check into handling as the puppy grows. It keeps the puppy accustomed to being examined and means you would notice a change underneath early rather than late.

Recording the Answer for Your Corgi

Once sex is confirmed, record it alongside the markings that identify this puppy — Pembroke coat colour, the pattern of white on the face and neck, and the breeder's collar colour. In a litter of similar red-and-white puppies viewed mostly from above, those top-side markings are how you will recognise your own dog in photos.

With the underside checked so rarely, a dependable record matters, and KinsLe Pet Pass keeps your Pembroke Welsh Corgi's confirmed sex, identity and your contact details on one verified ID card ready to show.
