What questions should I ask a breeder or rescue before getting a Roborovski dwarf hamster?

Published November 1, 2026

The short answer

Ask how old the Roborovski is, whether it was housed alone or with siblings, what seed mix and protein foods it eats, and whether it has ever bitten, lost weight, or had wet or matted fur around its tail. Because Roborovskis are tiny, fast, and mostly watched rather than held, ask how this one behaves at waking time and whether the seller handles it with a cup or by hand. Keep the answers together from the start, since KinsLe Transferrable Profiles move a Roborovski's diet, housing, and handling notes to you intact at adoption.

Ask About Age, Housing, and How This Robo Lives Now

Ask the Roborovski's exact age and whether it currently lives alone or with littermates. Roborovski dwarf hamsters are sometimes kept in sibling pairs, but pairs can fall out as they mature, so a seller who says this one already lives alone is telling you something useful about the enclosure setup you need to copy. Ask what size of tank or cage it lives in now and how deep the bedding is, because a Roborovski that has been burrowing in deep bedding will find a shallow tray stressful.

Ask when it wakes. Roborovskis are nocturnal and often active late in the evening, and a breeder or rescue that can tell you this individual's usual waking window has genuinely been observing it rather than guessing.

Ask How It Is Handled — and How It Isn't

Ask whether this Roborovski is ever hand-held or whether it is moved in a mug or tube. Most Roborovskis are observation pets: they are extremely quick, very small, and easily startled, and many never become comfortable being held in open hands. A seller who admits this one is a watcher, not a cuddler, is being honest about the species rather than underselling the animal.

Ask to see it moving around its enclosure at waking time. You want to see fast, coordinated running, bright eyes, and a clean, dry rear end. Ask whether it has ever escaped, because a Roborovski that has already found a gap in one lid will find the gap in yours, and knowing its exit route helps you seal the new home before arrival day.

Ask About Food, Weight, and Scent Glands

Ask for the exact seed mix it eats now and which protein foods it gets — a small piece of cooked egg, mealworms, or another source the seller uses. Roborovskis have fast metabolisms and hoard food, so knowing the current mix lets you change it gradually instead of swapping overnight and upsetting a tiny gut. Ask whether its weight has been steady and whether the seller ever weighs it on kitchen scales, which is the practical way to track an animal this small.

Ask whether the seller has noticed a waxy patch on the belly. Male Roborovskis have a scent gland there that can look like a small bald spot, and a seller who can explain it calmly knows the species.

Ask About Health and What Comes Home With It

Ask whether this Roborovski has ever had diarrhoea, matted fur at the tail, laboured breathing, or a head tilt, and whether it has ever been seen by a vet. Ask what the seller would want you to do if a paired Roborovski starts fighting its cage mate, because that answer reveals whether they will still advise you after the sale.

Ask what arrives with the hamster: a portion of its current seed mix, its wheel if it has one the right size for a Robo, and written notes on its waking time and favourite hiding spots. A wheel matters here — Roborovskis run long distances at night, and a seller who can name the wheel size this one uses has set the enclosure up for the species.

When the Answers Should Slow You Down

Slow down if the seller cannot say how old the Roborovski is, keeps many hamsters crowded in one small cage, or promises that this one loves being held for long periods. Those answers point to stock kept for volume rather than animals known individually, and with a hamster this small the individual details — diet, waking time, temperament — are exactly what make the first weeks go well.

Save the seller's answers alongside the adoption details themselves, because KinsLe Transferrable Profiles hand a Roborovski's full record — food, housing, quirks, and all — from the breeder or rescue straight to its new owner.
