What questions should I ask a chinchilla boarder about heat, humidity and dust-bath provision?

Published October 25, 2026

The short answer

Ask a chinchilla boarder for numbers, not reassurance: what temperature the room is held at, where the keeper should describe a cool room, comfortable around 15–20 °C and never warm, since chinchillas are generally in danger above about 24 °C; how humidity is kept down; how often dust baths are offered and with what dust; and what happens if the cooling fails on a hot night. If you book, get the agreed terms confirmed in writing. Care Pass in KinsLe gives the named boarder you book time-boxed, scoped access to your chinchilla's temperature limits and bath routine for that stay only.

Chinchillas come from cool, dry mountain air, and their dense fur, which protects them there, leaves them unable to shed heat in a warm room. Boarding questions for this species are therefore climate questions first, and a good keeper expects to answer them in numbers.

Temperature: Ask for the Number and the Backup Plan

Ask what temperature the room is held at, and judge the description you get back. The keeper should describe a cool room, comfortable around 15–20 °C, never warm, with a thermometer you can see and cooling that runs through hot weather rather than a window opened and hoped for. That range matters because chinchillas are generally comfortable around 15–20 °C and in danger above about 24 °C, and heat stress in this species can develop fast in a still, warm room.

Then ask what happens if the cooling fails on a hot night. The answer you want names a backup: a second cooled room animals can be moved into, someone alerted when temperatures rise, and checks overnight during a heat wave rather than a closed building left until morning. A boarder who has never considered cooling failure has not kept chinchillas through a summer, and visiting on a warm afternoon, when the room's real temperature is on display, tells you more than any brochure. Ask also how the temperature is monitored overnight and on the keeper's days off, because a room that is correct at noon can drift when nobody is watching the thermometer. A logged reading, taken morning and evening, is a strong sign; a shrug about nights is not.

Humidity and Dust Baths Keep the Coat Working

Ask how humidity is kept down in the boarding room. Damp air mats a chinchilla's dense coat, encourages skin problems, and makes a warm day feel hotter, so look for ventilation, a dehumidifier in muggy weather, and housing away from steamy kitchens, laundry rooms, and fish tanks. Ask to see where your chinchilla will actually live, not just the best cage in the building.

Ask how often dust baths are offered and with what dust. Regular baths in proper chinchilla dust are how this species keeps its coat clean and dry, since chinchillas must never be bathed in water. A knowledgeable boarder offers baths on a frequent, settled rhythm, uses dust made for chinchillas rather than sand, removes the bath after use so it does not become a toilet, and will happily use the dust you supply if your animal is settled on one type. Rich treats and sugary foods should stay off the menu during the stay as well, and a keeper who mentions keeping the diet plain, hay-based, and unchanged is showing the same careful mindset the climate answers promised.

Book in Writing, With the Limits Attached

Weigh the visit as a whole. Specific temperatures, a visible thermometer, a failure plan, dry air, and a confident dust bath routine mark a boarder who knows this species; talk of chinchillas enjoying a warm room should end your search there. If you book, get the agreed terms confirmed in writing, including the temperature range, the cooling failure plan, and the bath rhythm you discussed.

KinsLe keeps those limits attached to the booking because the Care Pass you create for that particular boarder expires on the final day of the stay, and until then opens only the climate needs, dust bath routine, and vet contact you chose to share, so the numbers you agreed are in the keeper's hands every hot night you are away.
