What should I ask, and what should I check in person, before boarding my gerbil with a small-pet boarding service?

Published October 25, 2026

The short answer

Ask first about hands-on experience with gerbils specifically, not just small pets in general, and how many gerbils the service boards at once. In person, look for a tank-style home that holds deep burrowing bedding, somewhere calm and dry, with secure, clean enclosures, fresh water, no predator access, and quiet away from barking, then ask about daily monitoring, their exotics vet, emergencies and a trial stay, and confirm bonded gerbils stay together throughout. For those dates, KinsLe's Care Pass provides a temporary, time-boxed link for the gerbils' carer, who needs no account to use it.

Gerbils test a boarding service differently from larger small pets: they dig, they chew, and a bonded pair is a unit that must not be split. Start by asking how much direct gerbil experience the staff have and how many gerbils stay at once, then look at the homes themselves. You want a tank-style setup with bedding deep enough for proper burrows, set in a calm, dry spot, with lids a determined gerbil cannot lift or chew through.

Food, Cardboard and Company

Supply your own staple mix for the whole stay and plenty of plain cardboard to chew, because gnawing is not a habit to manage but a need to meet. Confirm in writing that bonded gerbils travel, board and return together as one group, and ask how the service tells your pair apart from others without separating them. A gerbil returned alone, or a pair split for space, can fight on reunion, so this question is not a minor detail.

Checking Security and Quiet

Work along the enclosures looking for secure fastenings, clean dry bedding, fresh water, and a room where predator pets cannot enter and barking does not carry all day. Gerbils startle at sudden noise and thump warnings to each other, so a calm room is a welfare point, not a luxury. Ask how the tanks are cleaned during a stay, since moving gerbils to a bare holding box while their scent-marked home is scrubbed clean can unsettle a settled pair. Peek at the water bottles too: gerbils drink little but often, and a stuck ball-valve in the spout can leave a pair without water for a day before anyone notices at a glance.

Daily Checks, Vets and Emergencies

Ask how appetite and activity are monitored each day in an animal that hides food in its bedding, which exotics vet they use, and what happens overnight in an emergency. A short trial stay before a longer booking lets you see whether the pair returns settled and eating well. Leave an emergency contact able to authorize vet care, and your own written routine to go beside the tank.

Leaving the Pair Well Briefed

Write the feeding, chewing and cleaning routine down before you go, and keep a copy yourself so you can compare notes when the pair comes home. Set up Care Pass in KinsLe before departure: the link covers just the gerbil pair's stay window, opens without an account, and then expires.
