A one-night trial only tells you the truth if it is run as a rehearsal for the real booking, not as a lighter version of it — same cattery, same routines, same information handed over, and the same cat watching how it all feels.
Book It Exactly Like the Real Stay
Choose the cattery you would actually use for the long booking and, where possible, the same pen type she would have then. Pack her own food rather than relying on house food, add bedding that smells of home, and hand over the full care sheet: feeding times, medication if she has any, the habits that matter and the vet's number. A trial softened by special arrangements tests a stay that will never happen and teaches you nothing about the fortnight you are really planning.
What One Night Can Show You
One night is enough to answer the questions that matter. Does she eat away from home? Does she use the litter tray? How does she behave at drop-off, and how does she greet collection — settled, or wired and exhausted? Just as revealing is the cattery itself: how detailed and honest are its updates, and does the debrief afterwards describe your cat, or a generic good girl? Ask directly how she did overnight, in the quiet hours, not only at the cheerful moments when staff were passing.
Reading the Result Honestly
A cat who eats, toilets and settles on a trial night will usually manage a longer stay built on the same routine. A cat who does none of those things is not failing a test she should retake at greater length — she is telling you the plan needs to change, most often toward a sitter in her own home, where the territory is hers and only the human is new. Believe the trial; that is what it was for.
The Trial-Night Checklist
- Her own food for the night, plus a spare portion
- Bedding she has slept on at home
- The full care sheet, with vet and emergency contacts
- Any medication, measured and labelled
- A note of how she usually spends her evenings
When the trial involves a sitter instead, a KinsLe Care Pass hands over her routine as a time-boxed link — the feeding times, the hiding spots, the vet's number — and the access simply ends when the stay does, which is the right shape for a one-night test.
