What paperwork and breed records should come with a Kuvasz puppy?

Published October 29, 2026

The short answer

A Kuvasz puppy should come with a signed contract and receipt, registration or litter papers, an ancestry record, microchip details, and a vet-signed record of examinations, vaccinations, worming, and growth notes. Ask for copies of both parents' hip and eye screening and any other testing for their lines, the breeder's socialisation log for a guardian breed, and written feeding and exercise guidance for a puppy who will grow very large. Keep the breeder's contact details with the contract, and file the whole set in KinsLe's Pet Passport so your Kuvasz's records stay together for vet visits and travel.

Registration, ancestry, and a contract with weight behind it

A Kuvasz puppy should come home with registration or litter paperwork, a multi-generation ancestry record naming the sire and dam, microchip details or the recorded chip number, and a signed breeder contract with receipt. Check that the puppy's sex, colour, and identifying details match across all of them, and keep the breeder's full contact information with the contract.

For a large Hungarian livestock guardian breed, the contract deserves a slow read. It should cover the health guarantee and its conditions, the return-to-breeder clause, companion versus breeding placement, and any expectations the breeder sets about fencing, socialisation, and the kind of home the dog goes to. Breeders of guardians often interview buyers closely; the written agreement is where the outcome of those conversations should live.

Veterinary records and a growth log

Ask for the health record signed by the practice that examined the litter, listing each examination, vaccinations with dates, worming treatments and dates, and notes on heart, eyes, bite, and movement. For a puppy headed toward a very large adult size, a simple weight log from the breeder is genuinely useful: it shows steady growth and gives your vet a starting curve to follow at the first visits.

Any treatment, monitored concern, or puppy kept back longer than littermates should be noted in writing. Take the record to your vet promptly, because vaccination timing and growth checks for a giant-breed puppy are planned from documented dates and weights, not estimates offered at handover.

Parent screening for a big working guardian

Request copies of both parents' hip evaluation results and recent eye examination certificates, plus results for any other inherited-condition testing the breeder has completed in their lines. Verify that the names and identification on the certificates match the sire and dam in the ancestry record.

Ask directly about hip quality, eye findings, bone or joint problems, and temperament in close relatives, including how the parents behave with visitors and livestock if they work. A dated note of that discussion, filed with the certificates, becomes part of the health and temperament record your vet and any future trainer will be glad to have.

The socialisation log matters enormously in this breed

A Kuvasz is bred to make independent decisions about threats, so the breeder's socialisation record is one of the most important papers in the folder. Ask for a written log of what the litter experienced: different people including children where safely arranged, household and farm sounds, vehicles, handling, surfaces, and time away from littermates. Ask, too, for the breeder's honest note on your puppy's character, whether bold, watchful, or slower to approach new things.

Collect the breeder's continuing socialisation guidance in writing, along with feeding amounts for a fast-growing puppy and exercise limits they recommend while joints develop. Those instructions shape your first months, and having them on paper means everyone handling the puppy follows the same plan.

Coat, feeding, and breeder support after handover

Finish with the breeder's notes on the thick white double coat: brushing rhythm, handling the seasonal shed, and bathing guidance, plus the food and schedule the puppy is leaving on. Ask how the breeder wants to be contacted with questions, since a good Kuvasz breeder expects to advise owners for years and may want updates on growth and temperament.

File the contract, registration, ancestry record, screening copies, growth log, and socialisation notes in KinsLe's Pet Passport, keeping your Kuvasz's complete breeder and health packet together for vet visits, training handovers, boarding, and travel.
