How do I clean my dog's face folds properly?

Published October 27, 2026

The short answer

Clean your dog's face folds by lifting each fold gently and wiping the skin inside with a soft cloth dampened with plain warm water, working from the inner corner outward so trapped food, tear moisture and grit are lifted away rather than pushed deeper. Pat every fold completely dry afterwards with a second dry cloth, because folds left damp are the ones that turn pink, itchy and sour-smelling. Make it a calm daily habit after meals, when crumbs collect most, and KinsLe Care Teams lets you assign that fold wipe to whoever feeds your dog so the task is marked done with a timestamp instead of being forgotten.

Why folds need more than a quick face wipe

A wrinkled face looks clean on the surface while the skin hidden inside each fold stays warm, damp and loaded with whatever your dog has eaten, drunk or rolled through that day. Tears drain into the folds under the eyes, kibble crumbs lodge beside the nose rope, and saliva settles into the lip folds after drinking. That trapped moisture softens the skin, and bacteria and yeast that normally live harmlessly on the surface multiply in the sheltered fold until it reddens and starts to smell sour. Cleaning properly means cleaning inside the fold itself, not polishing the fur over the top of it.

The wipe itself, fold by fold

Settle your dog somewhere he already relaxes, with a soft cloth or cotton pad dampened in plain warm water — wet, not dripping. Start with the fold he minds least. Lift the skin gently with one thumb so the whole inner surface is visible, then wipe in one direction, from the deepest part of the fold outward, so debris travels out instead of being dragged further in. Turn the cloth to a clean section for each fold; a pad that cleaned a grubby lip fold should not then wipe beside an eye. Around the eyes, wipe away from the eyeball and never press on it. If crust has dried into a fold, hold the damp cloth against it for half a minute to soften it rather than scrubbing, because the skin inside a fold tears and stings easily.

Drying is the step that actually protects the skin

Most fold problems trace back to folds that were washed but left damp. Follow the wet wipe with a dry, soft cloth and pat inside every fold until the skin feels dry to your fingertip, especially the deep nose rope and the folds under the eyes where tears keep re-wetting the skin through the day. Avoid powders inside folds unless your vet has specifically suggested one for your dog; caked powder mixed with moisture makes a paste that irritates further. On heavy droolers and dogs whose folds stay wet from water bowls, a second quick dry pat later in the day does more good than a second full wash.

What to look for while your fingers are there

The daily wipe doubles as a daily inspection. Healthy fold skin is pale and dry with no odor. Pinkness, a yeasty or sour smell, brown staining that is spreading, hair loss along the fold edge, or your dog pawing at his face and rubbing it along the sofa all say the fold is irritated. A fold that becomes swollen, weepy, cracked or painful to touch, or redness that does not settle after a few days of careful drying, needs your veterinarian rather than more home wiping, because infected fold skin often needs treatment beyond cleaning. Note which fold flares first; that pattern is useful information to hand to the vet.

Building the habit so it never gets skipped

Tie the wipe to something that already happens daily — straight after the evening meal works well, when the day's crumbs and moisture are in the folds and your dog is settled and sleepy. Keep the cloths in one place by his bowl so nobody has to hunt for supplies, and keep sessions short and rewarded so a wriggly dog learns the routine predicts a treat rather than a struggle. In a household where different people feed and walk him, KinsLe Care Teams lets you put the fold wipe on his daily duty list for whoever is on feeding duty, with each completed wipe timestamped so the next person can see his folds were cleaned and dried today.
