How do I tell whether a young Labrador Retriever is male or female?

Published October 31, 2026

The short answer

Labrador puppies are among the easiest to sex because their short, dense coat leaves the belly clearly visible. A male Labrador has a distinct prepuce bump on the mid-belly, well ahead of his hind legs, while a female has a flat mid-belly and a vulva tucked directly under her anus at the rear. Chunky size, a broad head or boldness in the litter proves nothing, as well-fed females often outweigh males early on. After a clear look, KinsLe Pet Pass lets you record your Labrador's confirmed sex on a verified ID card alongside identity and owner contact details.

Labradors Give You the Clearest Belly View

A young Labrador Retriever is sexed by anatomy, and this breed's short coat makes the check easier than in most puppies. Support the puppy on its back on your lap. A male Labrador shows a neat, raised prepuce on the midline of the belly, noticeably forward of the hind legs, with a tiny central opening. A female Labrador's mid-belly is flat and smooth apart from the nipple row that both sexes share.

Turn to the rear to finish the Labrador check. Beneath the tail sits the anus in both sexes. A female has her vulva immediately below it, so close that the two openings almost form a vertical pair. A male has nothing in that spot — his single rear opening is the anus alone. If you found a belly bump and a bare rear, he is male; a flat belly and a close rear pair mean female.

Mistakes Labrador Owners Commonly Make

Labrador puppies are famously chunky, and owners often sex them by bulk. That fails quickly in this breed: a greedy female who secures a good nursing position can be the heaviest puppy in the litter, while a male born smaller may stay lighter for weeks. Head breadth is no better — young Labrador heads change shape rapidly as they grow, and the broad adult male look has not formed yet.

The nipple row causes a second confusion. Both male and female Labradors have nipples running down the belly, and in a well-fed puppy with a round tummy they can be prominent. Nipples are not a female marker. A third trap is the fresh umbilical stump in the first days of life, which sits on the mid-belly where a male's prepuce will be — if the puppy is only days old, look at the rear spacing as well before deciding.

Checking a Wriggly Labrador Safely

Pick a quiet moment when the Labrador puppy is drowsy, because an awake Lab pup is a strong wriggler for its size. Cradle the puppy on its back with its spine supported along your forearm or thighs, keep one hand across the chest, and look rather than press. The short coat means you rarely need to part hair — good light is usually enough.

Ask the breeder to show you a known male and female in turn; the contrast fixes the pattern at once.

Getting a Labrador's Sex Confirmed

Have the sex confirmed if your two checks disagree or the anatomy looks atypical in any way. Breeders do this daily, and a veterinarian confirms sex routinely at the first puppy visit. Raise it at that visit if a male's testicles are not both apparent as he gets older, or if you notice swelling, discharge or an opening that looks out of place — those are vet questions, not things to probe at home.

Confirmation matters because a young Labrador's sex is copied onto microchip registration, vaccination records and training or boarding forms. An early error follows the dog and is usually only spotted when a professional looks and disagrees with the paperwork.

Keeping Your Labrador's Details Straight

Note the confirmed sex together with the features that single out this Labrador — black, yellow or chocolate coat, any distinguishing mark, and the breeder's collar colour — because littermates in a solid-coloured litter look remarkably alike in photographs. A note made at selection prevents the common muddle of accurate records attached to the wrong puppy.

That is exactly the mix-up KinsLe Pet Pass is built to prevent, holding your Labrador Retriever's confirmed sex, identity and your contact details together on one verified ID card from the start.
