Foods a scarlet macaw must never have
Never give a scarlet macaw avocado, chocolate, coffee, tea or other caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, apple seeds, the pits of cherries, peaches, plums and apricots, rhubarb, or food heavy with salt, sugar or frying oil. Uncooked dried beans are also unsafe, and mouldy nuts are a genuine danger for a species offered nuts often. A scarlet macaw is one of the largest pet parrots, with intelligence, reach and beak strength to match, and none of that size makes these foods any safer for him.
Why a big, clever bird gets exposed differently
A macaw does not wait to be fed the wrong thing; he goes and gets it. Scarlet macaws learn which cupboard holds the snacks, can work a latch or a packet open, and will climb or fly to a counter where chocolate, coffee and avocado are being prepared. They also beg effectively, and a household that shares its dinner trains the bird to expect seasoned, salted food cooked with onion and garlic. The unsafe list for this species is therefore enforced by storage and habit, not by hoping the bird leaves things alone.
The table-sharing trap and fatty imitations
Macaws thrive on routine and social eating, so the wish to include one at meals is understandable, but your plate is the riskiest dish in the house. Sauces, gravies, roasted meats, salted nuts and desserts all carry ingredients on the banned list. Even among bird-safe foods, balance matters: a macaw offered unlimited rich nuts and fatty seeds because he loves them can crowd out the varied diet he needs, so treat foods stay measured rather than constant. Serve his own prepared portion at the table instead, in his own bowl, so the ritual survives without the risk.
Storage and serving rules for a macaw household
Keep chocolate, coffee, alcohol and onions in closed cupboards or rooms the macaw cannot enter, and clear counters before he comes out. Pit and deseed all fruit during preparation, since that beak cracks a peach stone without effort. Check stored nuts for mould and discard any that smell stale, and wash produce before it goes into the bowl. Every person in the house, including guests, needs the same message: nothing from your plate, nothing from the snack cupboard, no exceptions for a favourite human. Note also that a scarlet macaw's beak makes short work of plastic tubs and thin tins, so genuinely secure storage means solid containers inside closed cupboards or another room entirely, and a quick counter sweep before every out-of-cage session, because this bird checks personally whether yesterday's rules still apply to him today and tomorrow.
If your scarlet macaw helps himself
Recover what is left so you can judge how much is gone, secure the bird somewhere safe, and note the food and the timing. Call an avian veterinarian promptly for avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic or pit exposure, and watch for changes in breathing, droppings, balance or behaviour while you wait for advice. Do not offer food or home remedies to counteract it unless a vet directs you. Recording the break-in and the fix in KinsLe's Care Teams tells the next feeder exactly which storage habit failed and what changed.
