What paperwork and breed records should come with a Lancashire Heeler puppy?

Published October 29, 2026

The short answer

A Lancashire Heeler puppy should come with registration or lineage papers showing the litter, parents, and microchip number, a signed vaccination and worming record, copies of both parents' eye and patellar results, a health check letter from the breeder's vet, and a written contract and feeding sheet. Ask for the microchip transfer code before you leave, because this numerically tiny herding breed is hard to trace once paperwork separates from the pup. KinsLe's Pet Passport keeps that Heeler lineage, chip, and vet record together in one portable packet for his first appointments.

The folder a Heeler pup should leave with

A Lancashire Heeler puppy should go home with more than a receipt. Expect registration or lineage papers naming the sire and dam and the litter, a microchip certificate whose number matches the chip scanned in the puppy, a record card showing vaccination and worming dates signed or stamped by a veterinary practice, a recent health check letter, copies of the parents' health results, a written sale contract, and a feeding and routine sheet covering what the pup has been eating and when. Lay every page out before you pay the balance, read the names and numbers aloud, and photograph the set so a lost sheet can be reconstructed.

Why lineage matters so much in this little cattle dog

The Lancashire Heeler is a small, numerically scarce herding breed that once drove cattle by nipping heels and ducking kicks, so litters are few and lines are closely tracked. A proper lineage lets you see how closely the parents are related, confirm the breeder's account of the pairing, and keep the pup correctly recorded if you later breed, show, or need to contact owners of relatives about a health pattern. Check that coat colour, sex, and date of birth on the lineage match the puppy in front of you, and ask who holds the registration transfer so the record moves into your name promptly rather than staying with the breeder.

Parent health results to ask for by name

Ask for copies, not verbal reassurance, of health screening for both parents. Heeler buyers most often look for eye examination results and testing relevant to inherited eye conditions recorded in the breed, including primary lens luxation status where available, plus patellar assessment because these compact, active dogs can have slipping kneecaps. Dates matter: an eye certificate from several litters ago tells you less than a recent one. If a result is listed as a carrier status, ask the breeder to explain in plain language what that meant for this particular pairing and why the mate was chosen, and keep that explanation with the papers.

The first vet record and the chip transfer

Your own vet will want the breeder's record at the first puppy visit, ideally within the first few days at home. It should show birth weight or early growth notes if kept, worming dates, the vaccination given and its date, and any comment from the health check about heart, bite, hernias, or undescended testicles in a male pup. Separately, complete the microchip keeper transfer while the breeder's details are still fresh; a chip still registered to the breeder means a finder reaches the wrong household first. Note the new vet's name and the next vaccination due date on the front of the folder.

Contract, feeding sheet, and what a gap should tell you

The contract should state the price, what happens if a serious hereditary problem appears, any breeding restriction attached to the registration, and whether the breeder will take the dog back at any age if your circumstances collapse. The feeding sheet should name the food in plain terms, meal frequency, and the pup's current weight, because Heeler puppies are sturdy but easy to overfeed once they learn household routines. A missing lineage can sometimes be chased, but missing health copies, an unsigned record card, and no chip transfer together suggest haste you should not inherit. Storing the lineage, parent eye results, and chip certificate in KinsLe's Pet Passport means the whole Heeler file travels intact to vet visits, training enrolment, and boarding handoffs.
