In-Home Overnight Pet Sitting

An overnight sitter sleeps in your home, giving your pets an evening, a night, and a morning that feel almost normal. It is the closest thing to you being there — especially for anxious, elderly, or routine-driven animals.

What they do

Overnight sitting usually runs from early evening through the next morning, often ten to twelve hours in the house, with daytime walks or drop-ins added if needed. The sitter feeds dinner and breakfast, handles evening and morning toileting, and settles pets into their usual sleeping places — including, if that is the house rule, a dog on the bed.

The overnight presence itself does much of the work. Pets who pace, bark, or stop eating in boarding often relax at home with a person in the house. Someone is also there for the things that happen at night: a senior dog who needs a 2 a.m. toilet break, a cat who vomits, a storm that terrifies a noise-sensitive pet, or a puppy who cannot yet hold through the night.

Sitters also act as house sitters. They bring in packages, water plants, manage bins, and keep the home visibly occupied, which many owners value as much as the pet care. Boundaries need to be explicit: which rooms and beds to use, whether guests are allowed (usually not), smoking, and use of the kitchen, laundry, and car.

Because the sitter is living in your space, the vetting bar is higher than for a short visit. Expect a longer meet-and-greet, a trial night for longer bookings, and a written agreement covering access, house rules, and what happens in an emergency at 3 a.m.

Services you can expect

  • Evening-to-morning stays in your home
  • Dinner, breakfast, and bedtime routines
  • Overnight toilet breaks and puppy checks
  • Evening and morning walks
  • Medication administration as directed
  • Home security tasks — mail, lights, bins, plants
  • Daily photo updates and overnight notes
  • Midday drop-ins added to overnight bookings

What to expect

  • Arrival and departure times agreed in advance and kept
  • Your pet's normal evening and morning routine followed closely
  • A morning update covering the night — sleep, toileting, appetite, anything odd
  • House rules respected: beds, rooms, guests, and appliances as agreed
  • Your home left clean, locked, and as you left it
  • The sitter reachable overnight for genuine emergencies

How to choose

  • Meet in your home and watch how the sitter interacts with your pets at their most relaxed
  • Book a single trial night before committing to a long trip
  • Ask about their overnight limits — how many nights, and whether they sit elsewhere in the day
  • Confirm insurance and bonding cover overnight stays in client homes
  • Agree house rules in writing, including guests, smoking, and which bed they use
  • Check references specifically from overnight clients, not just drop-in clients

Questions to ask

  • What hours will you actually be in the house each night?
  • Will you be working or sitting elsewhere during the day?
  • How do you handle a pet who needs help in the middle of the night?
  • What are your rules on guests, and do you ever leave pets alone in the evening?
  • Can we do a trial night first?
  • What do you need from me — bedding, towels, instructions, parking?

Red flags

  • Vague about actual overnight hours — 'evenings' that turn out to be a late visit
  • Plans to bring guests, partners, or their own pets without asking
  • No trial night offered for a long or first-time booking
  • House left messy, or evidence the agreed routine was not followed
  • Uncomfortable discussing house rules or putting them in writing
  • No plan for overnight emergencies or veterinary access

What affects the price

  • Number of nights and whether midday visits are included
  • Number of pets and their overnight needs, such as puppies or seniors
  • Holiday periods and booking length
  • Travel distance and parking or access difficulty
  • Extra house-care duties beyond pet care
  • Short-notice or single-night bookings
