Luxury Pet Resorts
Luxury pet resorts board pets in larger, home-style suites with extras such as webcams, one-to-one play, and spa-style grooming alongside the stay. The extras are enjoyable, but the value still stands or falls on the same basics as any boarding: supervision, hygiene, and honest care.
What they do
Resorts typically replace standard kennel runs with glass-fronted or home-style suites furnished with raised beds, and they add services in layers — extra play sessions, individual cuddle time, swimming or splash sessions where offered, training refreshers, and grooming. Dogs are still grouped carefully for play, fed to their own diets, and rested on a schedule, because even a premium setting cannot remove a dog's need for sleep.
What separates a genuine resort from a standard kennel with better marketing is staffing and transparency. Look for low dog-to-staff ratios during play, overnight presence, webcams that actually work when you test them, and written daily report cards covering meals, toileting, play, and mood. Facilities at this level should be just as rigorous about vaccinations, trial assessments, and separating unwell pets as any good kennel.
Many resorts also board cats in a separate quiet wing, sometimes with multi-level condos and window perches. Judge that wing by cattery standards, not by the dog lobby: no shared airspace with barking dogs, hiding places in every unit, and staff who monitor appetite closely. A beautiful reception area tells you nothing about the cat wing, so tour both.
Because resorts sell packages, be clear about what your pet will actually receive each day versus what is available at extra cost. Ask for the daily schedule in writing, confirm which activities suit your pet's age and health — a senior dog may not benefit from extra high-energy play — and agree in advance what happens if your pet is too anxious or unwell to join group activities.
Services you can expect
- Private suites with raised beds and webcam viewing
- One-to-one play, cuddle, and enrichment sessions
- Group play matched by size, age, and play style
- Swimming, splash, or agility sessions where facilities allow
- Full grooming, bathing, and nail care during the stay
- Training refresher sessions with resort trainers
- Daily report cards with photos and activity notes
- Separate luxury cat condos in a quiet wing
What to expect
- A full tour including suites, play yards, isolation area, and the cat wing if you have a cat
- A written daily schedule showing rest periods as well as activities
- Webcam access that works on your own phone before you travel
- Vaccination and assessment requirements applied with no exceptions for premium bookings
- A candid report if your pet skipped activities, ate less, or seemed unsettled
How to choose
- Judge the basics first — cleanliness, supervision, fencing, and emergency vet arrangements
- Test the webcam and ask what happens overnight, not just during staffed play hours
- Ask for the real staff-to-dog ratio in playgroups, not the ratio for the whole building
- Match extras to your pet: calm enrichment for seniors, not maximum activity for every dog
- Read what the package includes line by line so signature extras are not all paid add-ons
Questions to ask
- What is included each day, and which activities cost extra?
- Is someone on site overnight, and which vet do you use in an emergency?
- How do you assess dogs for group play, and what is the alternative if mine does not pass?
- Can I watch the suite webcam at any hour, and is recording or only live viewing available?
- Which vaccinations do you require, and do you offer a trial or assessment day first?
- How will you adjust the plan for a senior, anxious, or recovering pet?
- What exactly will the daily report tell me?
Red flags
- Marketing focused entirely on furnishings with no mention of staffing or veterinary arrangements
- Webcams that are promised but unavailable to test during your tour
- No assessment or vaccination checks because premium clients are waved through
- Playgroups that look crowded, with one staff member watching a large number of dogs
- Reluctance to show isolation, laundry, or food preparation areas
- Pressure to buy large packages before a first short stay has been tried
What affects the price
- Suite size, furnishings, and webcam access
- Number of one-to-one sessions, swims, or enrichment activities included
- Grooming, bathing, and training added to the boarding package
- Length of stay and peak holiday demand
- Whether cats or additional dogs from the household are boarded together
- Special diets, medication administration, and extra health checks
