Mobile Veterinarians

Mobile veterinarians bring the clinic to your door, examining and treating pets at home or — for farm and equine vets — in the field. For anxious pets, multi-pet households, and owners who struggle to travel, a home visit can turn a stressful ordeal into a calm routine.

What they do

A mobile vet works from a vehicle equipped for consultations, examinations, vaccinations, blood sampling, and many minor procedures. Appointments happen in your living room, garden, or yard, where your pet is on familiar ground and usually far less stressed than in a waiting room full of strangers.

The scope is broad but not unlimited. Mobile vets handle preventive care, ongoing-condition reviews, senior and palliative care, and many day-to-day problems. Anything needing surgery, advanced imaging, or hospitalization is referred to a clinic or hospital — a good mobile vet works closely with one and will say so upfront.

Visits run longer and slower than clinic appointments by design. Without a waiting room pressing, there is time to observe your pet in their normal environment — how they move around the house, eat, and interact — which occasionally reveals things a clinic exam would not.

Scheduling works differently too. Mobile vets plan routes by area, so appointments cluster geographically; booking ahead matters, and same-day availability varies. Some focus on particular work — wellness only, senior care, or end-of-life visits at home — so check what a given practice actually offers.

Services you can expect

  • Home-visit wellness exams and vaccinations
  • Health checks for multi-pet households
  • Blood sampling and basic diagnostics at home
  • Microchipping
  • Senior pet and mobility assessments
  • Ongoing-condition reviews and medication checks
  • Palliative and hospice support
  • Peaceful end-of-life visits at home
  • Behavior and environment observations in the home
  • Referrals for surgery, imaging, or hospital care

What to expect

  • A confirmed arrival window and a call or message if the vet is running late on their route
  • A calm, unhurried exam with your pet kept comfortable and secure in a suitable room
  • Clear guidance on what can be done at home and what would need a clinic visit
  • Records shared with you and, where relevant, with your registered clinic
  • Practical preparation instructions — for example, keeping cats indoors before the visit

How to choose

  • Confirm what the van or vehicle is equipped for and which procedures always go to a clinic
  • Ask which clinic or hospital they refer into for surgery, imaging, and emergencies
  • Check the areas and days they cover, and how far ahead visits book up
  • Look for experience with nervous pets if stress is your main reason for choosing mobile care
  • Ask how emergencies are handled — most mobile vets cannot offer round-the-clock cover themselves

Questions to ask

  • Which services can you do at home, and which need a clinic?
  • Where do you refer for surgery, X-rays, or hospitalization?
  • How should I prepare my pet and home for the visit?
  • What areas do you cover, and how do visit routes affect timing?
  • What happens if my pet needs urgent care between visits?
  • Will you share records with my regular clinic, if I have one?

Red flags

  • No referral relationship with a clinic or hospital for work that cannot be done at home
  • Vague answers about emergency cover or out-of-hours contact
  • Claims to be able to do everything a hospital can, from a vehicle
  • No written records or summaries after visits
  • Rushed, chaotic handling that leaves an already anxious pet more distressed

What affects the price

  • Travel distance and where your home falls on the vet's route
  • Number of pets seen during the same visit
  • Tests, samples, or preventive products provided at the visit
  • Length and complexity of the consultation
  • Whether the visit is routine, urgent, or outside normal hours
