Warmth first: move the hedgehog somewhere snug
A hedgehog deep-clean starts with relocating the hedgehog to a warm, escape-proof playpen or carrier lined with fleece, in a room at comfortable temperature. Hedgehogs chill quickly when out of their heated enclosure, and a cold hedgehog is a genuine health concern, so the clean should be brisk and the holding spot cosy. Never put the hedgehog in a bath or sink as a holding strategy while you clean. Once she is settled, strip the enclosure completely: liners out, bedding out, hides, bowls, litter tray, and the wheel all removed for individual attention.
The wheel earns its own paragraph
A hedgehog's exercise wheel is the single dirtiest object in the enclosure, because hedgehogs run for hours nightly and relieve themselves on the move, so the running surface gets coated and dried in layers. Soak the wheel in hot water with a little plain washing-up liquid, scrub every ridge with a stiff brush, and rinse until the water runs clear and the surface feels squeak-clean. A solid-surface wheel makes this job far easier than a barred one and is safer for hedgehog feet. Wash the wheel's stand too, and let the wheel dry fully before it goes back, or tonight's run will simply redistribute damp grime around clean bedding.
Liners, bedding, and washing without scent
Machine-wash fleece liners for a hedgehog enclosure with an unscented detergent and no fabric softener, and wash them hot enough to come out genuinely clean, checking the fleece for snagged threads that can wrap around small legs. Hedgehogs live nose-down in a scent-mapped world, and heavily perfumed laundry products can make a hedgehog avoid her bed or rub and self-anoint frantically at the unfamiliar smell. If you use loose bedding instead of fleece, discard it entirely at a deep-clean rather than sifting and saving. Litter trays get emptied, scrubbed, and refilled with fresh litter, and hides should be washed or replaced if urine has soaked in.
Scrub the enclosure and rebuild it warm
Wash the enclosure base and walls with hot water and plain washing-up liquid or diluted white vinegar, paying attention to the toilet corner where waste concentrates, then rinse and dry everything thoroughly. Hedgehogs explore by smell and taste, so residue from scented or phenol-based disinfectants is unsafe in their space. Rebuild with clean liners or fresh bedding pulled flat, the hide in its usual position, the litter tray in its corner, and the wheel back in place, then check the enclosure's heat source is running and the temperature is back in its normal range before the hedgehog returns. Fresh water and her usual food bowl placement complete the familiar picture.
Routine, and the health checks cage day allows
A weekly full deep-clean suits most hedgehog enclosures, with the wheel rinsed far more often, ideally daily or every other day, since it fouls fastest. Use the deep-clean to glance over the hedgehog herself when she is awake: dry, flaky skin, missing quills in patches, or a hedgehog who has stopped using the wheel and is eating less are all reasons to book a veterinarian. Also confirm droppings in the old bedding look normal in size and colour. KinsLe Care Teams lets you assign your hedgehog's deep-clean as a recurring duty and log it with a timestamp, so the weekly reset does not quietly slide.
